About the City of Łódź

Lódz is the second largest city in Poland with the population of about 1 million inhabitants. It is situated 120 km west of Warsaw.

At the beginning of the 19th century Lódz was still a small village and a part of Russia, as a result of the partitioning of Poland. Lódz grew rapidly into the textile center after the importation of German weavers by the government. In 1914 Lódz was the scene of a battle after which it fell to Germany. It became part of Poland when the country regained independence after the World War One in 1918.

Today, Lódz is the center of the textile industry in Poland. The factories of the city of Lódz also manufacture machinery, chemicals, leather goods, paper, tobacco, and foodstuffs. There is the University, Technical University of Lódz, the Medical Academy, the Music Academy, the Academy of Art and the Film and Theatre Institute.

There are many interesting places and buildings to see in Lódz.

  • Piotrkowska Street - It is a historical fact that the name of the street appeared in 1823 when the mayor Czarkowski ordered to designate all streets, placing street names. Five years later the street name was declared the Main Piotrkowska Street and thus it stayed. Epigrams, songs and poems were written about this street. Even the inhabitants of Lódz say that Lódz is Piotrkowska Street plus everything around it.
  • The Kosciuszko Monument – a memorial to a general of Insurrection, who took part in the war for freedom of USA.
  • The Town Hall
  • The Palace of the Poznanski Family - At first it was the neo-renaissance, one-store building with no exterior ornaments. In the years 1898-1903 the Palace underwent reconstruction under the management and leadership of the architect Adolf Seligson. The Palace has been restored in a neo-baroque style.
  • Ksiezy Mlyn - It was built in the years 1870-1890. It was customary for the factory properties to be erected first. With time, companies built workers’ houses and a house or palace for the owner nearby. Ksiezy Mlyn is the biggest complex of this sort in Lódz area.
  • The Factory Gates
