About
the City of Łódź Lódz is the second largest city in Poland with the population of about 1 million inhabitants. It is situated 120 km west of Warsaw. At the beginning of the 19th century Lódz was still a small village and a part of Russia, as a result of the partitioning of Poland. Lódz grew rapidly into the textile center after the importation of German weavers by the government. In 1914 Lódz was the scene of a battle after which it fell to Germany. It became part of Poland when the country regained independence after the World War One in 1918. Today, Lódz is the center of the textile industry in Poland. The factories of the city of Lódz also manufacture machinery, chemicals, leather goods, paper, tobacco, and foodstuffs. There is the University, Technical University of Lódz, the Medical Academy, the Music Academy, the Academy of Art and the Film and Theatre Institute. There are many interesting places and buildings to see in Lódz.
